I needed to run a LONG new water line so I had a contractor friend do the digging with his L series GST with frame mounted 'hoe, while my L3010 HST handled backfilling the trench with screenings and then dirt.

We wound up driving each other's tractors for the final grading and I got a lot of complements about the ease of using the HST tranny. He wishes now that he had one on his 'bota.

I went directly from a Massey Ferguson stick shift to the HST, so this was my first expwerience with a GST. I have to admit that I'll stick with the HST for the rest of my tractor driving years. Once you use it you don't want to go back.

Haven't seen "GST" before (except in Canada---and I think that stands for "General Sales Tax"

For clarity, if HST is the acronym for Hydro Static Transmission, what is GST? ....

GST stands for glideshift transmission. It is simular to the powershift transmissions used in farm tractors. The earlier ones starting in the late 80's were an eight speed transmission and the newer ones are 12 forward with 8 in reverse. You don't need a clutch to shift up or down at all in either direction. There is little power lost to shift compared to the hydro's although the hydro can do as much if not more then any configuration of gear type transmissions. ....
